LIGAO CITY – Rains brought by the southwest monsoon did not deter more than 500 local and foreign triathletes coming from different regions from joining the 2022 Mt. Mayon Triathlon in the province of Albay on Sunday, August 14.
The athletes who were divided into four categories (elite, age group, relay and team), battled for the 10 kilometer run, 40 kilometer bike, and 1.4 kilometer swim race which started and ended at the Sawangan Park and Legazpi Boulevard in Legazpi City.
Among famous participants who joined the events were broadcast journalist Kara David, 2019 SEA games silver medalist Andrew Kim Remolino, and Ms. Aura International 2021 Alexandria Faith Garcia.
The event, which is now on its seventh year, was halted for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Albay Governor Noel Rosal and Mayor Geraldine Rosal of Legazpi City, in a joint statement, thanked the triathletes for always supporting and participating in the event which build camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participants.
“Mt. Mayon triathlon is also considered as crowd drawer and a key factor in the promotion of tourism in the province and in the entire Bicol region and nation as well,” Department of Tourism Bicol Director Herbie Aguas told Inquirer in a phone interview Sunday.
