MANILA, Philippines — About 60% of Metro Manila’s major traffic intersections are now fitted with traffic sensors, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Friday.
MMDA chairperson Carlo Dimayuga III said the agency is doing a “phase-by-phase” installation of traffic sensors in the metropolis, saying it aims to install these in all major intersections.
“Sa ngayon, 60% na sa mga major traffic intersections sa Metro Manila ang nalagyan na ng traffic sensors,” he said in a public briefing.
The MMDA sees the full installation of traffic sensors in all major intersections will be completed within two to three years.
Loop detectors or sensors are set to replace the timers of all traffic lights in the intersections across Metro Manila. The new technology entails the installation of loop detectors or sensors that will determine the flow of traffic at intersections.
Mobile pumping stations
MMDA also said mobile pumping stations have been deployed, especially in the Manila Bay walk area which is prone to flooding.
Dimayuga said the pumping stations were provided by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
“Mayroon na tayong mobile pumping stations sa area para maiwasan, mayroon na tayong identified na lugar na alam natin na ‘yun ang kadalasan nababaha at nakaantabay na doon ‘yung mobile pumping station,” he said.
(We already have mobile pumping stations in areas prone to flooding.)
MMDA earlier clarified that ongoing drainage systems projects in the Manila Bay walk area caused flooding in some streets in Manila last week, and not the controversial Dolomite Beach.
