MANILA, Philippines – Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla met with United Kingdom Ambassador Laure Beaufils on Friday to discuss different issues, including the continuation of the United Nations Joint Programme for Human Rights in the Philippines.
The DOJ in a statement said among other topics, Remulla and Beaufils discussed the enhancement of the DOJ’s witness protection program to allow for more convictions in court.
The DOJ added that Remulla and Beaufils also discussed the prosecution of law enforcers linked to killings in the government’s war on drugs.
In addition, Remull and Beufils also discussed how to decongest the country’s jails and prisons, and how to digitize records of the Bureau of Jail Management (BJMP) and Penology and the Bureau of Corrections, in partnership with the Department of Interior and Local Government.
In July, the BJMP released over 15,000 persons deprived of liberty due to overcrowded jails.
