First Lady joining West Visayas State University law faculty

ILOILO CITY — Students at West Visayas State University (WVSU) here were surprised on Wednesday to find Louise Araneta-Marcos among their law faculty members.

The first lady’s name appeared in WVSU’s Integrated University Information System where her corresponding subject was listed as Criminal Law 1.

Based on merit

WVSU president Joselito Villaruz on Friday confirmed Marcos’ recruitment, saying she submitted her requirements in accordance with the university’s selection guidelines.

“We have a system of hiring faculty members and we based that on merit, credentials, teaching experience and professional experience. It is open to all, we do not pick who we want to accept,” he said in an interview with Bombo Radyo Iloilo.

Marcos earned her law degree at the Ateneo de Manila University and has taught law at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Far Eastern University, Northwestern University, and Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte and St. Louis University in Baguio.

She mentioned these schools in her interview with Boy Abunda in March, during the campaign period for the general elections last May. “I’m a lawyer, I like teaching, I like staying out of the limelight,” she told the TV host, adding that she had been teaching for 20 years.
