Calabarzon logs 419 new COVID-19 cases

LUCENA CITY—The number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in the Calabarzon region, with 419 new patients recorded on Wednesday, August 3.

This is the highest single-day tally this year, replacing 288 recorded on July 28.

As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the Health Education and Promotion Unit of DOH–Calabarzon reported that the number of active COVID-19 cases in the region jumped to 3,714, which was only 733 on July 1.

Cavite topped the list with 1,375 active cases followed by Laguna with 959; Batangas with 765; Rizal with 330; Quezon, 285.

The regional health authorities did not provide information on the COVID-19 variants of the active cases in the region.

The DOH central office, however, citing the genome sequencing results from July 30 to August 1, reported 1,015 more cases of BA.5, another highly transmissible Omicron subvariant.

At least 122 of these cases were from Calabarzon.

The DOH–Calabarzon also reported 700 new recoveries and 12 new fatalities from COVID-19.

Last month, at least 92 COVID-19 patients died in Calabarzon. The number of fatalities has already reached 25 as of August 3.

Vaccination target

The DOH-Calabarzon is targetting more than three million booster vaccination shots against COVID-19 in the region during the first 100 days in office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The vaccinators would go to workplaces, transport terminals, community centers, commercial centers, places of worship, and schools to conduct the vaccinations, the DOH-Calabarzon said.

As of July 25, the DOH reported that fully vaccinated individuals in the region reached 10,473,312. At least 2,693,629 of these had their first booster shot, while 203,089 had their second booster.

The DOH-Calabarzon aims to vaccinate 13,435,568 qualified recipients.
