MANILA, Philippines — Interim poll body chief George Garcia is retaining lawyer John Rex Laudiangco as acting spokesperson of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

In a memorandum dated August 3 and addressed to Laudiangco, Garcia said: “You are to retain your designation as Acting Spokesperson of this Commission effective immediately.”

In the performance of his duties, Laudiangco is ordered to report directly to Garcia, based on the memo.

A copy of the notice was shared with reporters on Wednesday.

To recall, Laudiangco, a director of the Comelec’s law department, was named as acting spokesperson of the poll body in May, replacing Director James Jimenez who was relieved from his post as Comelec spokesperson following the controversy in the poll body’s presidential and vice presidential town hall debates.

“Being the acting spokesperson person is my additional function concurrent to my duties as Director III of the Law Department,” Laudiangco told INQUIRER.net in a text message.

“In more ways, being the Director III of the Law Department proved to be advantageous to my being the acting spox (spokesperson). As Comelec is the constitutional enforcer and administrator of all election laws, I focus my press briefings [on] applicable laws and rules, [on] which our operations and administration are based on,” he added.
