MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday extended his condolences to the family of his distant uncle and former president Fidel Valdez Ramos who died on Sunday at the age of 94.
The President’s late father and namesake Ferdinand Marcos was a second cousin of Ramos.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family of former President Fidel Valdez Ramos who passed away today having lived a full life as a military officer and public servant,” said Marcos in a statement made on Facebook.
“Our family shares the Filipino people’s grief on this sad day. We did not only lose a good leader but also a member of the family,” he added.
The President then called on Filipinos to pray for Ramos, adding that the “legacy of his presidency will always be cherished and will be forever enshrined in the hearts of our grateful nation.”
Ramos served as the 12th president of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998.
Ramos also served as chief of the defunct Philippine Constabulary during the presidency of the President’s father. He then became chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and then served as Defense secretary during the term of the late president Corazon Aquino.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1950, Ramos also earned a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1951.
