Marvin’s victory sparks controversy

08:12 AM March 19, 2012

Marvin Sonsona and Froilan Saludar pulled off separate victories in the Pinoy Knockout I card Saturday night at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

Despite the victories, Samson “Don King” Gello-ani of SGG Promotions was not satisfied on how the bouts were officiated, particularly the match between Sonsona and Carlos “El Flaco” Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic.

Sonsona was awarded a fifth-round knockout in the double main event fight card but Gello-ani was very disappointed with the decision of referee Tony Pesons.

Pesons halted the bout at the 1:14 mark after Fulgencio did not make the count. But Gello-ani saw it a different way.

“He (Pesons) counted very fast and did not translate (his counting) to Spanish so Fulgencio was not aware that he was being counted,” said Gello-ani. “He badly wanted to fight back, he just waited for Pesons’ count to reach eight to stand up,” added the promoter. “ I want to make a formal complaint to the Games and Amusement Board (Gab) about this incident.”

Gello-ani wanted to assign Bruce Mctavish or Danrex Tapdasan to handle the Sonsona-Fulgencio bout but Pesons stepped inside the ring first.

“It could have been a perfect promotion. Everyone would have been happy, especially both boxers, if that incident did not happen.”

Sonsona banked on his signature arsenal of lethal combinations to down Fulgencio, who wanted a rematch against the Filipino.

another error

Another of Gello-ani’s complain was the time error of the timekeeper in the WBO World Youth flyweight championship bout between Saludar and Mexican Alejandro “ Terrible” Morales.

Saludar successfully defended his WBO World Youth Flyweight title against the resilient Morales via unanimous decision.

But according to Gello-ani, the Gab time keeper only used a time of 1 minute and 15 seconds in the final round instead of the standard three-minutes round.

Meanwhile, Sonsona said he is prepared to move up to the featherweight division after winning over Fulgencio.

Gello-ani also agreed.

“I want to move him up to the featherweight because I see he is very comfortable in this division and the bantamweight division is overcrowded. I also don’t want Sonsona to fight world champion Nonito Donaire. I want him to make his own mark in the featherweight division,” said Gello-ani.

Cabalquinto

triumphs

Adones Cabalquinto and Dan Nazareno’s bout for the vacant Philippine Junior Welterweight title is considered a candidate as the fight of the year after they showcased brutal boxing in their 12-round matchup in the undercard.

Cabalquinto won via unanimous decision against Nazareno to clinch the title despite being deducted one point after their heads clashed in the 10th round.

Mark Anthony Geraldo of Valencia, Bukidnon stunned Jerwin Ancajas to win the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Superflyweight title via a majority decision.

In the opening bout, Omega Gym’s Jack “The Golden Boy” Tepora knocked out Michael Dopol in the 1:27 mark of the first round.
