MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to hire more non-teaching personnel who will take over the administrative tasks handled by teachers.

This will allow teachers to focus on teaching, which in turn could result in the upgrading of teaching standards, DepEd spokesman Michael Poa said Wednesday.

“Mayroong plano ang ating department na i-ease off ‘yung mga administrative tasks ng mga teachers kasi napapansin na bukod sa pagtuturo, mayroon din silang administrative tasks,” he said in a press briefing.

“Sa ngayon ang plano natin, we need to upscale ‘yung ating mga teachers. So dahil doon, ang gagawin natin is mag-focus muna sila sa teaching, tatanggalin natin yung mga administrative tasks,” Poa added.

Poa also said the department is considering “non-basic wage benefits” for teachers.
