MANILA, Philippines — Over 2.8 million students have so far enrolled for School Year 2022-2023 after the enrollment period kicked off last Monday, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

DepEd spokesman Atty. Michael Tan Poa said the turnout is better this year compared to last year where only 200,000 students enrolled on the first day.

“Maganda. Matagumpay ang ating unang araw ng enrollment kahapon. Maganda ang ating turnout. As of 7:35 p.m. last night, nasa 2.808 million ang nag-enroll sa ating mga learners,” he said in an interview on ABS CBN’s TeleRadyo on Tuesday.

(It’s good. The first day of enrollment was successful because the turnout was high. As of 7:35 p.m. last night, about 2.808 million students have enrolled.)

“Mas maganda kaysa ito sa turnout, dahil last year around 200,000 lang ang nag-enroll sa first day,” he added.

(This is better than last year because only 200,000 students enrolled last year on the first day.)

DepEd said it expects about 28.6 million students to enroll for the coming school year.

Poa assured that DepEd is coordinating with the schools and other government agencies to ensure that everything is set for the opening of classes on August 22.

He said the DepEd is coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways to ensure that school infrastructure is enough to accommodate children, who will soon have five-day in-person classes.

By Nov. 2, all public and private schools are required to implement full five-day face-to-face classes.

Poa also assured that the majority of teachers have already been vaccinated against COVID-19, ahead of the opening of classes.
