MANILA, Philippines — Inquirer.net on Thursday earned over one million likes on TikTok, less than a year since the news organization ventured into the popular social media platform.

The goal of bringing balanced news and fearless views closer to its audience first drove the news organization to create its own space on TikTok in October 2021, according to social media manager Ralph Gurango.

“Given the reach that TikTok has among Filipinos, having a strong presence in the platform allows users to have access to news and information through Inquirer.net’s TikTok,” Gurango said.

He also pointed out that Inquirer.net’s TikTok account shares content tackling “different takes on the news,” from user-generated content to bite-sized explainers.

Inquirer.net, like many news organizations, has moved into the TikTok scene with more Filipinos seeking more of their news from the said platform — from only two percent in 2020 to 15 percent at present, according to the Digital News Report 2022 of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
