MANILA, Philippines – Four drivers have tested positive for illegal drug use in random testing conducted along Barangay Calumanguin, Gumaca, and Lucena Grand Terminal in Quezon Province, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) reported on Tuesday.
The LTO said two out of the 112 drivers had positive results for using prohibited drugs on Monday.
In a similar random drug test on Tuesday, two more drivers had positive results out of the 52 drivers who were tested.
The driver’s licenses of those with positive results were confiscated, and their trucks were impounded, the LTO noted.
Noreen Bernadette San Luis-Lutey, LTO Director for Region 4A, said, “an average of 36 people die on Philippine roads per day and some of these deaths can be attributed to drunk and drugged driving.”
The LTO implemented the random drug test operations with the assistance of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and DrugCheck Philippines under the Republic Act No. 10586 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.
“The LTO, in partnership with the PNP-HPG and PDEA, shall continue with its campaign to make our roads safer by keeping drunk and drugged drivers off our streets and have them placed in jails and rehabilitation centers for treatment,” San Luis further said. Nicole Faye Agcaoili, INQUIRER.net intern
