Soldier slain, 5 others wounded in clash with NPA in Northern Samar

TACLOBAN CITY—A soldier was killed and five others were wounded in a clash Tuesday with suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members in Catubig town, Northern Samar.

The names of the casualties, who belong to the Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion (IB), have yet to be disclosed as of 2:30 p.m.

An initial report said 12 soldiers were in the vicinity of Barangay Osang at 9:25 a.m. when suspected rebels using anti-personnel landmines ambushed them.

The firefight resulted in the death of a soldier and injuries of five others.

The injured soldiers were airlifted to Eastern Visayas Medical Center in this city, said Lieutenant Joyce Ann Bayron, spokesperson of the 20th IB based in Las Navas town.
