Girl slain in NPA-Army clash in Batangas

LUCENA CITY—A 9-year-old girl died during an encounter Monday between alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and the military in Taysan town in Batangas province, the police reported Tuesday.

The Batangas police said the girl was herding goats when hit “by a bullet from an unknown direction,” as rebels were retreating from Army troops after a three-minute firefight around noon in Barangay Guinhawa.

The victim was taken to the Batangas Medical Center in Batangas City but died on the way.
