MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake rocked parts of Surigao del Norte on Tuesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tectonic tremor jolted the northeast the town of Burgos at around 2:04 a.m. It had a one kilometer depth of focus, the state seismologists added.
Phivolcs did not report intensities from the quake. Damage to infrastructure and aftershocks are also not expected.
An earlier earthquake bulletin showed that the said tremor was measured at a magnitude 5.0, but according to Phivolcs science research specialist Benj Rodriguez, this was based on preliminary data and has since been updated.
Eleven earthquakes around the same area, with magnitudes ranging from 1.9 to 3.5 followed the said tremor.
“Usually, nangyayari na talaga itong series ng events dito sa Burgos. Hindi lang po ngayon. Kumbaga, natural na lang doon sa area na gumagalaw siya at nagkakaroon ng mga sunod-sunod na paglindol,” Rodriguez explained to INQUIRER.net over the phone.
(These series of events are usual in Burgos. It didn’t just happen now. Tectonic movements that come one after the other are not new to the area.)
