LUCENA CITY – A motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet was killed while his two pillion riders were hurt in a road accident in this city Saturday morning.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Reynaldo Reyes, Lucena police chief, in a report said the motorcycle driven by Carl Aljhon Regonay, 22, with pillion riders Christian Torio, 24, and Jonathan Torio, 20, was traveling along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay (village) Ibabang Dupay around 5:30 a.m.

After passing the Dumacaa bridge, the vehicle crashed into a concrete light post.

Due to the impact, all riders were thrown off the vehicle and landed on the pavement. Regonay died on the spot because of severe head injuries.

The pillion riders, who also were not wearing crash helmets, were taken to the Quezon Medical Center for treatment, the report added.

The wearing of a crash helmet while riding a motorcycle is mandated by the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.
