LUCENA CITY – Three motorcycle riders died in separate road accidents on Friday and Saturday (July 8 and 9) in Batangas province, reports said.
The Batangas police in a report said motorcyclist Nel Anthony Coronel accidentally bumped pedestrian Alfredo Abay along JP Laurel Highway in Barangay (village) San Roque in Sto. Tomas City around 5:30 a.m. on Friday.
The wayward motorcycle consequently hit a jeepney driven by Marblend Regana.
Coronel sustained grave injuries and was taken to Laurel District Hospital but died along the way.
In a phone interview, Police Staff Sergeant Billy Rey Olalo, the case investigator, said the fatality had no crash helmet as mandated under the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.
Meanwhile, in Batangas City, rider Christian Jason Base slammed into the rear portion of a parked jeepney along the side of the road in the village of Cuta around 12:30 p.m., also on Friday.
Base died on the spot from fatal injuries while his back-rider Christian Ajay Ramos was taken to Batangas Medical Center for treatment.
The investigators found out that the motorcycle had no valid registration documents, and Base also had no driver’s license.
According to Police Staff Sergeant Joseph Sulit, the case investigator, both riders had no crash helmets for head protection.
Motorbike rider Exquiel Maranan also rammed into a parked jeepney in Barangay Bagong Pook in Rosario town around 3:50 a.m. Saturday.
Maranan died while being taken to the hospital. His back-rider Mark Joseph Mandigma was injured and is still being treated.
The police reported that Maranan had no driver’s license.
The report did not state whether or not both riders were wearing crash helmets.
