Extension of free ride program pushed

Bagong Henerasyon Rep. Bernadette Herrera on Thursday called for the extension of the government’s “Libreng Sakay” (free ride) program and urged Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno and Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to come up with means to extend the program.
She pointed out that the Department of Finance and Department of Transportation could also invoke the last provision on safety nets in the Tax Reforms for Acceleration and Inclusion Law for the allocation of fuel excise proceeds to the program.
She noted that the executive branch borrowed from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 2020 when funds were needed for urgent pandemic needs. —JEANNETTE I. ANDRADE
