Two fires in two hours hit Cebu City anew

THE fires just keep on coming in Cebu City, with two fires breaking out in two hours early yesterday morning.

The first broke out in the second floor of a two-story house in corner Juana Osmeña and Don Jose Avila streets, barangay Capitol Site, at 7:58 a.m. The house is owned by Cedric Jesus To.

Senior Supt. Aderson Comar, Cebu City fire marshal, said four other homes were partially damaged.

Charice Lima, a registered nurse and one of the occupants said the fire started after a fluorescent bulb overheated in the adjacent room.

Another boarder who asked not to be named said she was just sleeping barely an hour after she ended her duty at Cebu Doctors’ Hospital when the fire broke out.

Comar said they will verify if electric misuse caused the fire. At 9:57 a.m., firefighters responded to an alarm in Paradise 2, barangay Kinasang-an.

The shanty owned by Felix Cabonilas was burned down with damages pegged at P5,000, said fire investigator F03 Lowel Opolentisima.

Opolentisima said a barangay worker named Josephine Apostol hurt her foot after she helped put out the fire.

The fire broke out after someone failed to put out a lamp.

In barangay Suba, Capitol officials led by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia led the distribution of relief assistance to 100 fire victims staying in the barangay gym.

The governor turned over a P2 million check to Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama in simple ceremonies.

The Provincial Social Welfare Office turned over P300,000 worth of relief goods to barangay Suba.

The relief goods include canned goods, 100 sacks of rice, kitchenware, mats, and blankets.

A P5,000 cash assistance will be given to each family of the three fire victims who died in a fire in Upper Lucimba, barangay Pardo, Cebu City.

Suba fire victims like 54-year-old Carina Palconit said there was something to be thankful for despite losing everything in last week’s fire.

She said she managed to save her 8-month-old granddaughter from the fire.
