PNP warns vs online sexual harassment as man arrested for lewd post
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has warned the public anew against posting sexist remarks in online platforms as this may be considered a form of sexual harassment.
“We ask the public to be responsible in using the internet as your wrong actions can degrade someone’s reputation,” PNP officer-in-charge Lieutenant General Vicente Danao Jr. said Sunday.
The statement came after a 34-year-old truck delivery crew member in Pasig City was arrested on June 23, as he was reportedly watching the video of a 19-year-old student that he secretly took while the victim was doing her morning exercise in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City.
He later posted it on Facebook with a caption which, according to the PNP, was a colloquial term that insinuates a lewd act.
“This is a classic example of how the fundamental rights and privacy of other people can be violated if they are disrespected even in social media,” Danao stressed.
The incident was reported to the Anti-Cybercrime Group-Eastern District Anti-Cybercrime Team (ACG-EDACT), which then led to the suspect’s arrest.
