MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health’s (DOH) COVID-19 tracker on Thursday showed there are 716 new coronavirus infections in the country, raising active cases to 5,523.

These new cases also brought the total nationwide COVID-19 caseload to 3,698,509, including 3,632,491 recoveries and 60,495 deaths since 2020.

The recorded 716 new coronavirus infections were significantly higher as these were almost double the average number of infections recorded from June 13-19, which was 436. It was also higher than Wednesday’s 593 cases.

In terms of the number of cases per region recorded in the last two weeks, Metro Manila continues to lead with the highest number at 3,002, followed by Calabarzon with 989, and Western Visayas with 510.

Independent pandemic monitor Octa Research earlier noted that the COVID-19 positivity rate in the National Capital Region (NCR) had already reached five percent, surpassing the World Health Organization’s (WHO) benchmark.

Per city nationwide, Quezon City tops the list with the most reported cases at 680, followed by Manila with 392, and Makati with 372, according to the DOH.

Despite the consistent increase in COVID-19 infections in the past few weeks, the DOH has assured the public that no surge has happened yet.
