MANILA, Philippines — As far as Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Marat Pavlov knows, President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will maintain an “independent policy” on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Pavlov said the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was “briefly” discussed during his meeting with Marcos Jr. in Mandaluyong City on Monday.
“We touched on the situation in Ukraine but very briefly and Mr. President-elect said a few words regarding the situation,” Pavlov said in a press briefing.
“As far as I understand, the president-elect would like to continue his independent policy and he will cooperate with the Russian Federation,” he added.
Initially, in March, Marcos Jr. said that while he was worried for Filipinos in Ukraine, he believes there is no need for the Philippines to take a stand regarding the European country’s conflict with Russia.

Marcos Jr., however, had a change in his stand a few days later, saying the freedom of Ukraine must be respected.
Last week, incoming National Security Adviser (NSA) Clarita Carlos said the Marcos Jr. administration plans to take a “neutral” stance in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
