MANILA, Philippines — Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez urged Filipinos on Sunday to set aside the “cancel culture” and heed President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s call for unity.

Speaking during the Independence Day rites at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Cavite province, Romualdez paid tribute to heroes who died for the country’s freedom.

“Let us carry on in honoring the memory of our heroes by doing our part in the heavy task of nation-building,” he said.

Romualdez, the incoming House Speaker, said, “Let us all protect the gains of independence by working hard to move our country forward.”

“In the coming days, we are being called again to action and service. Not to bear arms against a foreign invader, but to heed the call of unity by the incoming administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. We are asked to reach out to our fellow Filipinos, friends and foes alike, and appeal to them to link arms for nation-building,” he pointed out.

Romualdez noted that the May 9 polls polarized the country that “even families were torn apart by loyalties to opposing candidates.”
