Samar fisherman killed, two others hurt as homemade explosive blew up

TACLOBAN CITY — A fisherman died while two of his companions sustained injuries after a homemade explosive they used in fishing blew up in Sto. Niño town, Samar province on Tuesday morning.

Emiliano Davila, 40, together with his cousins, Rolan, 28, and Jorgie, 31, went fishing along the seawaters of their community in Sitio Salvacion of Barangay Ilijan at around 7:35 a.m.

Emiliano was about to throw the homemade explosive, locally known as “badil” when it exploded resulting in his death.

His companions sustained serious wounds on the different parts of their bodies and were confined at the Calbayog City District Hospital for treatment.

Illegal fishing in some parts of Samar province remains to be rampant despite the strong campaign of the government against it.

Under the country’s law on illegal fishing, a penalty of five to 10 years imprisonment and confiscation of the catch await those who use explosives, noxious or poisonous substances, or electricity.
