“Just like a father to every Filipino, I am very proud of you… It is not everyday that I get to mingle with the Philippine team, so let me take this chance to express my appreciation for all the medalists and all athletes’ record breaking feats,” Duterte said.
“I salute you for showcasing our talents and giving your best despite the limitations in your training due to COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.
Duterte then encouraged the Filipino youth to participate in sports and other productive activities.
“I thus encourage the Filipino youth to engage in sports and other productive activities that will teach them the distinct values of the Filipino and at the same time will uphold the country’s distinction as the most competitive athletes in the global community,” he said.
The Philippines amassed 226 medals in the 31st SEA Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam, placing fourth among 11 countries.
