MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) recently bagged the silver medal in the newspaper front-page design category at this year’s WAN-Ifra Asian Media Awards.
The winning design appeared in the July 26, 2021, issue and was specially made for the day President Rodrigo Duterte was to deliver his sixth and last State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Conceptualized and rendered by Elizalde Pusung and Maximillan Villanos of the PDI art department, it framed the day’s banner headline and incorporated select quotes — policy directives, promises, and controversial statements — from Duterte’s past SONAs.
Completing the design was a presentation of key socioeconomic data from Duterte’s five-year-old presidency, including statistics on the war on drugs and the pandemic response, as compiled and curated by the Inquirer research team.
This year’s awardees were announced on May 23.
\Founded in 1948, WAN-Ifra, or the World Association of News Publishers, is a global network of 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, covering 60 member publisher associations representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.
