Pagasa: Wet weekend in western section of PH due to ‘habagat’

MANILA, Philippines — Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected in the western section of the country on Saturday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“Nagbabalik ang habagat o southwest monsoon dito po sa western sections ng ating bansa, simula dito sa may western part of Central Luzon down to Mindanao,” Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estraja noted.

(The southwest monsoon or “habagat” is once again affecting the western sections of the country, from the western part of Central Luzon down to Mindanao.)

The state weather bureau also cautioned residents in these areas, specifically in Metro Manila, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, romblon, Palawan), Bicol region, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula, of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rain.

While the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is not directly affecting the country’s weather today, Pagasa said it may return and trigger rain showers in the next two to three days.

“Mayroon tayong possible na low pressure area (LPA) na mabubuo within the intertropical convergence zone. Malaking impluwensiya noong ITCZ, plus this LPA, sa mga magiging paulan natin sa Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao hanggang sa kalagitnaan ng susunod na linggo. Bagamat itong low pressure naman, mababa ang tsansa na maging isang bagyo.”

(A low pressure area may form within the intertropical convergence zone. While it is not likely to intensify into a storm,  it may  still bring rains to Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao until the middle of next week.)

No gale warning has been raised by Pagasa over the country’s seaboards, Estareja said.
