Veteran journalist in Bohol dies

TAGBILARAN CITY—A former councilor and veteran journalist in this city died early Thursday morning.

The death of lawyer Danilo “Dandan” Bantugan was confirmed by his family and friends.

Bantugan, 57, began his writing and radio career in media outfits such as the Bohol Chronicle-dyRD and Bohol Sunday Post as a columnist and host of commentary radio programs.

He was elected councilor in this city from 2004 to 2007 and 2007 to 2010. He also taught law at the Holy Name University-College of Law.

Before his death, Bantugan served as executive vice president of the Bohol Tri-Media Association and editor-publisher of Bohol Sunday News.

He also served as a member of the transition team tasked to oversee the turnover of government affairs for the incoming provincial administration of governor-elect Erico Aristotle Aumentado.

In a message, Aumentado said Bantugan boosted his confidence and moved him to “continue the fight no matter how tough the battle was.”

“You are part of my victory! Your service, dedication, and strong commitment toward true change have inspired me so much to work hard from day 1 till our victory,” said Aumentado in a statement.

The date of his interment has yet to be announced.

Bantugan is survived by his wife Merly, their three children, and two grandchildren.
