CEBU CITY –– Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) Visayas Field Unit are going after members of a kidnap-for-ransom group who allegedly abducted last May 4 a Chinese businessman in Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

Lt. Zosimo Ravanes Jr., team leader of the AKG in the Visayas, said the suspects were based in Manila before they transferred to Cebu.

“What they were really after is money,” he said in an interview on Wednesday, May 25.

Two Chinese nationals–Rong Tong Xue and Guo Min Li–were arrested during a joint operation of the AKG, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, and the Regional Intelligence Division (RID-7) inside the alleged safe house of the suspects.

Li Hong Yu, a Chinese businessman and real estate developer, was allegedly kidnapped by the suspects who demanded $200,000 (P10 million) from the victim’s family.

But instead of giving in to the demand of the suspects, the victim’s family sought the help of the AKG officers, who immediately hatched an operation to rescue Yu.

During the operation last May 7, the two suspects were arrested at their alleged safe house.

Xue and Li told investigators that they were only assigned to guard the victim and they had a leader whom they called “boss.”
