MANILA, Philippines — Only 103 new COVID-19 cases were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday with active cases further going down to 2,241.
Based on the COVID-19 Tracker website of the DOH, these new infections are slightly lower than the 110 cases recorded on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s new cases are also fewer than the average cases recorded the previous week from May 9 to 15 — 160 cases per day, from a total of 1,118 infections.
With this, the total number of confirmed infections is now 3,688,100 nationwide, with 3,625,407 recoveries and 60,452 deaths.
A total of 22,742 individuals, meanwhile, were tested on Tuesday, May 17.
These numbers were recorded a week after the May 9 national and local elections. Experts previously warned that COVID-19 infections might surge by May due to neglected health standards during the campaign.
Apart from this, the DOH earlier said that it had already detected a local transmission of Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 — estimated to be around 20 percent more infectious than the BA.2.
To date, there are now 17 recorded BA.2.12.1 cases in the country — 16 are local cases while one is from a returning overseas Filipino living in Western Visayas.
