MANILA, Philippines — Isolated rain and thunderstorms will persist in the extreme Northern Luzon due to a frontal system, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported on Wednesday.

The frontal system will continue to bring cloudy skies with rains in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Ilocos Norte, possibly leading to flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains in the said areas.

“Patuloy na umiiral ang frontal system sa bahagi ng extreme Northern Luzon kung saan dala pa rin nito ‘yung maulan na panahon…Patuloy tayong maging alerto sa mga posibleng pagbaha at pagguho ng lupa, lalong lalo na sa event ng severe thunderstorms,” Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said in an early morning public forecast.

(“The frontal system continues to be felt in the extreme Northern Luzon, bringing about persistent rainy weather…Stay alert for possible flash floods or landslides, especially in the event of severe thunderstorms.”)

Despite the consistent rain showers this week, Castañeda reiterated that no low-pressure area or storm is monitored in proximity with the Philippine Area of Responsibility. The agency, however, is closely observing indicators that may signal the transition from summer to rainy season, especially in Western Luzon and Metro Manila.

No gale warning has been raised, indicating safe ship motions for all areas in the country, but residents from the extreme Northern Luzon must set sail with caution due to the moderate to high coastal waters and wind speed.

Meanwhile, fair weather and occasional rain showers from afternoon to evening are expected in Metro Manila until Saturday.
