SIQUIJOR—The Liberal Party (LP) in Siquijor province is reorganizing following the resignation of its two top officials.
Former Siquijor Governor Ben Aquino turned in his resignation two weeks ago as LP provincial vice chairman in support of the resignation of provincial party chairman, lawyer Adam Duhaylungsod last January.
In Duhaylungsod’s resignation letter addressed to LP president Mar Roxas, he said he decided to resign as LP provincial chair and member to spend time with his children and to concentrate on his law practice.
But Aquino told the Inquirer that he and Duhaylungsod resigned from the party because of “newcomers who are dominating local party affairs.”
With their resignations, the provincial party treasurer, Danny Villa, has assumed as provincial chairman, Aquino said.
Although the political kingpins of Siquijor, the Fua family, are affiliated with the Lakas CMD party, President Benigno Aquino III won overwhelmingly in the 2010 elections in Siquijor, beating closest rival Joseph Estrada by more than 5000 votes. The Lakas CMD candidate, Gilbert Teodoro, came in fourth.
Aquino would not say if he and Duhaylungsod were joining the camp of the Fuas but said they considered themselves as independent.
Aquino was LP’s candidate for governor in the 2010 elections but lost to Gov. Orlando Fua Jr.
