2 dead in stabbing incident fueled by argument over election results

DAVAO CITY—A political argument has resulted in the stabbing to death on Friday night of a man and his daughter, with the suspect being a partner of the victim’s other daughter in Diamond Village in Barangay Matina Aplaya in this city.

The police report said Panfilo Manrique, 71, and his daughter Geraldin, 43, were killed by Rio Ballenas, 30, whose partner is another daughter of Panfilo.

Major Noel Villahermosa, Talomo Police Station commander, told the Inquirer that the victims were arguing over their political leanings on the national and the local scenes.

Although the names of those they were supporting were not mentioned, Villahermosa said the suspect was agitated as the candidates he was supporting in the local elections in Norallah, South Cotabato, lost.

“He (Ballenas) got mad,” Villahermosa said in explaining the cause of the killing.

The police official added that after stabbing the victims, Ballenas further vented his anger by going out of the house shouting that he killed those he had heated arguments with. He was eventually arrested.

The suspect’s three children, who witnessed the incident, were immediately brought to the Women and Children Protection Desk at the police station.

Ballenas was also detained at the detention cell of the police station.
