MANILA, Philippines—Amid rumors of the possible emergence of a Senate super majority in the 19th Congress, Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri said it was still premature and his focus was on his current responsibilities as majority leader as he helps shepherd the 18th Congress to a close.

“There has been a circulating story regarding a new super majority in the incoming 19th Congress,” Zubiri said.

“To address the different questions of the media as to whether I will continue to be the majority floor leader, I think it would be presumptuous of me to make this assumption at this point in time, as we are still awaiting the official proclamation of the Comelec,” he said.

“In the meantime, there is still much work to be done. We are still in the middle of a pandemic and we must focus our energy on current challenges the country is facing.” Zubiri adds.

“By tradition, we in the working majority will decide and elect the officers and leadership in due time,” said Zubiri.

“This will be done in a democratic manner, based on qualifications and values that will uphold the traditions of the Senate as an institution. We have a bloc of almost a dozen independently elected senators and we look forward to working productively with the new administration for the good of the Filipino people,” he said.
