MANILA, Philippines — The camp of presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos — regardless of political color — to support the former senator who is leading the partial and unofficial count of the Commission on Elections.

Lawyer Victor Rodriguez, spokesperson for Marcos Jr., said the ousted dictator’s son would push for his “unifying brand of leadership” among Filipinos.

“We need to support him regardless of our political color, race or belief because he is now the president of the country. He will be the president of the country, he will be the leader, we only have one nation, we only have one country and that is the Philippines,” Rodriguez said in a television interview on Tuesday.

Marcos’ running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, is “full of gratitude” for the trust given to her by the Filipinos, according to her spokesperson.

“Well, the results of the election demonstrate that the first step has been taken. Overwhelmingly, Filipinos have joined and showed their support to the call for unity,” Liloan Mayor Cristina Frasco said.

“Over and above our political differences is our common love for our country demonstrated by an overwhelming number of Filipinos that came out to exercise their democratic right to vote,” she added.

Frasco said the President’s daughter was ready to extend a hand of unity to her rivals in the May 9 elections.

“Mayor Inday Sara has always been a unifier and that has been her message all along together with our next president Bongbong Marcos and so I have no doubt that the move of the next administration will be one that is anchored on unity no matter the political divisions these past elections,” she said.

Marcos Jr. and Duterte were headed for a landslide win in the partial and unofficial tally of votes cast during Monday’s national elections.
