MANILA, Philippines — House Deputy Speaker Wes Gatchalian is proclaimed as the new mayor of Valenzuela City.

Based on the 100% transmitted election returns from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Gatchalian got 275,650 votes, which is more than thrice than his opponent Bombit Bernardo, who garnered 75,026.

“Maraming marami pong salamat sa tiwala at suporta! Isang malaking karangalan ang maluklok na mayor at paglingkuran ang ating mahal na Lungsod ng Valenzuela!” he said in a Facebook post.

(Thank you so much for your trust and support. It is a big honor to be elected as mayor and to serve Valenzuela.)

Gatchalian served as Valenzuela representative in the 14th and 15th Congress from 2007 to 2013.

Meanwhile, his brother Rex won unopposed as the city’s representative, garnering 141,794 votes.
