BAGUIO CITY—Elections in the Cordillera province of Kalinga began smoothly, but poll officials had to repair or replace five vote-counting machines due to problematic scanners, lawyer Elenita Tabangin Capuyan, the province’s election officer, said on Monday, May 9, election day.

But she said the glitches did not disrupt the poll exercise in this northern province, an eight-hour commute from Baguio City.

Voters came out early to cast their ballots in Kalinga, which is under Alert Level No. 1. There are 154,423 registered voters in the province.

The area remains peaceful. A recent robbery that victimized volunteers of a re-electionist had not been categorized as an election violation.
