VP bet Sara Duterte casts vote in Davao City

MANILA, Philippines — Vice presidential candidate Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio returned to her hometown in Davao City as she cast her vote Monday for the 2022 national elections.

Duterte-Carpio arrived at the Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School at around 9:10 a.m.

It is the same school where her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, will vote.

Duterte-Carpio is the incumbent mayor of Davao City. She first stepped onto the political scene in 2007 when she was elected as the city’s vice mayor until 2010.

She  was elected Davao City mayor in 2010 and served until 2013. Duterte-Carpio once again ran for Davao City’s mayoral post in 2016 and 2019, which she both won.

Duterte-Carpio is the first female mayor and the youngest to have been elected to the position in the history of Davao City. She is also a lawyer.

With Duterte-Carpio’s father ending his six-year presidential term and with the 2022 national elections looming, talks about his successor began to surface. Among the names floating were that of Duterte-Carpio’s.

She, however, shut down speculations of her presidential bid when she filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for Davao City’s mayoral post.

Less than a week before the deadline for substitution of candidates, however, Duterte-Carpio withdrew her COC for Davao City mayor to vie for the vice presidency.

She ran for the vice presidential post under the Lakas-CMD party, with her running mate being Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
