DOLE: Employees working on election day to get 30% extra pay

MANILA, Philippines — Employees who will be working during election day on May 9 are entitled to 30 percent extra pay, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III announced Sunday.

This, after President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 1357 declaring May 9, 2022, a special non-working holiday.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), citing the Labor Code, said the following terms applies to employees working on election day:

For work done during the special day, employees shall be paid an additional 30 percent of their basic wage for the first eight hours of work.

Those employees who rendered overtime work — that is, working for more than eight hours —  shall be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on the said day.

If employees will work on a special day that also falls on their day off, they shall receive an additional 50 percent of their basic wage for the first eight hours of work.

For overtime work on a special day that also falls on their rest day, employees shall be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on the said day.

Bello urged workers who will be at work on election day to vote.

“We highly encourage our workers who are registered voters to exercise their rights to suffrage, and if they will report to work on May 9 after casting their votes, they must receive an additional 30 percent in their daily pay,” Bello said in a statement.

Based on the data of the Commission on Elections, there are 67.4 million registered voters – 65.8 million in the Philippines and 1.6 million abroad – for the 2022 polls.
