MANILA, Philippines — Agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested five South Korean fugitives in separate operations in Metro Manila and Pampanga.
According to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, the foreign fugitives were arrested on Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5 by operatives of the BI-Fugitive Search Unit (FSU).
BI-FSU Chief Rendel Ryan Sy identified the first Korean arrested as Kang Ju Hwan, 39. He was caught on Wednesday at the Clark Freeport in Mabalacat, Pampanga.
The Busan District Court issued an arrest warrant for him, alleging that he managed illegal internet gambling companies that did not pay or repay profits depending on the game results.
Sy said Kang and his cohorts earned an estimated 900 million won from the said racket which they operated from February to August 2019.
Meanwhile on Thursday, FSU agents arrested in Parañaque City another Korean national identified as Paek Sanghun, 41, wanted in South Korea for telecommunications fraud.
He was issued an arrest warrant by the Suwon district court in South Korea for allegedly engaging in voice phishing operations that defrauded victims of more than half a million dollars.
On the same day in Batasan Hills, Quezon City BI-FSU arrested Song Jongmin, 40 and Kim Kyungmo, 32, this time for fraud.
Son is subject of an arrest warrant from the central district court in Seoul where he was charged with fraud, while Kim is wanted to stand trial before the Busan district court where he was charged with engaging in telecommunications fraud and voice phishing.
Meanwhile, arrested in an establishment along Timog Ave., Quezon City was Yang Minseong, 32.
Arrest warrants were issued against Yang in South Korea for allegedly being a member of a criminal syndicate and for economic crimes.
He was also tagged as one of the leaders of “Kang Minho Pa,” a voice phishing syndicate that defrauded over 1 Billion Korean Won from their victims, according to South Korean authorities.
Meanwhile, Morente said that the arrested Koreans were also undocumented and are already overstaying as their passports were already cancelled by the Korean government.
“They will all be deported for being undesirable aliens, aside from being included in our blacklist and [are] banned from reentering the Philippines,” Morente said.
