MANILA, Philippines — An additional 168 coronavirus infections were reported Thursday on the COVID-19 tracker of the Department of Health (DOH).

This was slightly higher than the previous day’s 159 new cases but still lower than the average daily cases recorded the previous week, or from April 25 to May 1, which was at 200 infections per day or a total of 1,399 new COVID-19 cases.

The DOH COVID-19 tracker also showed that active cases increased a bit from Wednesday’s 4,692 to Thursday’s 4,694. This is the first time active infections increased after weeks of consistently going down.

New cases reported on May 5 add to the nationwide confirmed COVID-19 infections of 3,686,543, which included 3,621,410 recoveries and 60,439 fatalities.

Independent pandemic monitor Octa Research said earlier Thursday that Metro Manila could see around 500 to 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day should the coronavirus transmission increase after Election Day, May 9.
