MANILA, Philippines — The people of Sorsogon are now reaping the fruits of the construction of the Sorsogon Coast Road project, which was opened to the public last August 2022, senatorial aspirant and former Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said on Friday.

“Isa po sa pinag mamalaki kong proyekto ang Sorsogon Coastal Road. This provides better access for people wanting to visit the historically rich and scenic attractions of Barcelona and Bulusan. It will also strengthen the local tourism industry,” Villar said.

The alignment of the accomplished project runs along Rompeolas or the Sorsogon City’s baywalk up to Barangay Balogo, providing road travellers a pleasant view of the Sorsogon’s Coastline. The primary function of the Coastal Road is to serve as a Diversion Road for vehicle users and to improve connectivities between Casiguran, Gubat, and Castilla.

“The four-lane Sorsogon City Coastal Road with a total length of 5.52 kilometers may be considered among the grandest of the Build-Build-Build projects in Bicol Region undertaken by DPWH Regional Office 5 and Sorsogon First District Engineering Office,” Villar further said.

The coastal road with rock causeway and three bridges with a total length of 110.70 lineal meter begins at junction Daang Maharlika traversing several barangays of Sirangan, Sampaloc, Balogo and will eventually connect to barangays Pangpang, Tugos, Cambulaga, and Talisay in Sorsogon City.

“The project is also equipped with bicycles lanes which starts at Daang Maharlika and ends at the existing transport terminal in Sorsogon City. Ipagpapatuloy po natin ang mga ganitong proyekto hindi lang naman para sa atin ‘to. Para sa mga anak at apo din natin at sa susunod pang henerasyon,” Villar ended

Other than decongesting the heavy traffic in the main thoroughfare of Sorsogon City, this road was built to provide protection to the surrounding areas from storm surges especially the Bicol Region is among the most frequent path of typhoons entering the Philippine area of responsibility.
