Bongbong Marcos plans to develop internet-based disaster risk info roadmap

MANILA, Philippines — If elected, presidential bet and former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. plans to develop a comprehensive internet-based disaster risk information roadmap to address the harmful effects of natural disasters on the environment and protect the public.

Marcos said the roadmap will be implemented through an information technology program.

“This is very important to protect our environment as we institute programs to balance economic  gains and environment,” he said in a statement.

Marcos said he is eyeing to use the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) system as a model.

Under the program, comprehensive information on dimensions of disaster risk are included such as hazards, exposure, vulnerability and capacity.

Studies, information, and mapping are likewise in the program’s disaster risk information to understand risk drivers and underlying factors.

Marcos earlier said environment protection and preservation is among his priority programs, noting the need for policy reforms to establish peaceful balance between economic development and the environment.

The creation of the Department of Disaster Resilience is among the hopeful’s programs. He will likewise prioritize reforestation promotion and a stricter anti-illegal logging law, and institute the creation of industrial forest plantations to supply market demand for wood.

“Nature has its rights that should be protected. It should be allowed to flourish, reproduce and attain its abundance side by side with human civilization in perfect balance and harmony with our growing communities,” he said in one of his provincial rallies.

“We should do this if we want to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our society from the onslaught of natural calamities,” added Marcos.
