The Inquirer Foundation, through the online learning platform Artkipelago, is offering scholarship grants to 300 high school, college students, fresh graduates and young professionals who wish to take Artkipelago video-on-demand (VOD) courses from April to December 2022.

Artkipelago is a virtual school for the arts that is designed for both beginners and professionals who wish to develop their potential or fine-tune their craft. It offers courses in major creative fields like music, film, and the performing arts, with more programs added almost every month.

Four visionaries

It was established by four visionary, enterprising artists who form its brain trust and currently sit on the school board, namely music maven Twinky Lagdameo, live events producer and software developer Jay Adlao Block, music executive Ian Monsod, and composer Gina Tabuena-Godinez.

The platform features curated programs with various learning modes to choose from — live webinars, workshops and VOD learning modes — making it highly adaptable to different interests, skill levels and personal schedules. Among the mentors on its roster are Nyoy Volante, Jay Durias, Jim Paredes, Chino Singson and many others.

The Inquirer-Artkipelago partnership covers the following VOD courses:

• Create Innovation to Design, All-in-One: Discovering a Different Approach to Making Music

• Find your Fans: Connecting Artists and Fans with Data

• How to Get Hired: Learn to Create Music for a Client

• Shine Online: Intro to Content Creation

• Pitch Craft: The Basics of Selling Your Creative Work

• Launching Stars: Intro to Music Management

• Make Things Happen: Intro to Production Management

• Freestyle Rules: Basic Guitar Improvisation

• Music Creation: A Crash Course from Songwriting to Production

• Show Don’t Tell: Become and Effective Screenwriter

• Home Recording: Producing a Demo like a Pro

The collections of the courses and their respective mentors are published at artkipelago.com/collections.

Application period

To apply for a scholarship, interested students and young professionals may send a brief profile and a one-page essay on what they are passionate about—as well as their chosen course—to foundation@inquirer.com.ph. They may indicate more than one course in the essay.

The application period starts today. The scholars are expected to produce a capstone project or culminating assignment upon completion of their course.

“There are so many people who have creative interests and talents. However, not everyone can turn that passion into a profession or simply explore or nurture what they have,” Artkipelago president Twinky Lagdameo said.

Highly deserving

“There is so much information available but unless a trained person gives guidance or you have a map, it is hard to know what really works, what are the next steps to take, where to go, who to know and how to meet them, or simply how to start. Our vision is to support and help grow the Philippine creative economy by offering continuous education to Filipino creatives through learning from local and international experts,” she said.

“We are really excited to partner with the Inquirer Foundation to grant scholarships … to highly deserving individuals who want to explore and upgrade their talent [but] don’t have access to this learning or the means to do so. Given the foundation’s extensive network of schools and workers, we at Artkipelago hope that we can further reach and help creative people take what they love to the next level,” Lagdameo added.

“The Inquirer Foundation is grateful to Artkipelago for helping us extend opportunities and knowledge to aspiring individuals with creative inclinations,” said Connie Kalagayan, the foundation’s executive director. “We hope that we can further our mission to empower the youth through these scholarship grants. May this learning opportunity inspire and ignite passion to propel our youth further to better themselves and achieve their dreams.”
