MANILA, Philippines — After his attacks on Vice President Leni Robredo, the party of Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Friday retrained its sights on former Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as it urged the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to garnish the bank accounts of Marcos heirs.

Aksyon Demokratiko chair Ernesto Ramel Jr. urged the BIR to pursue this as part of the government’s collection effort on the unpaid P203-billion estate tax of the heirs of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, led by the estate administrator, his son and namesake.

In an April 21 letter to BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay, Ramel requested the BIR chief “to immediately and continuously implement collection efforts, whether civil or criminal manner of collection, including distraint/garnishment of the bank accounts relating to the estate of the late dictator Marcos Sr.”

The two-page letter was received by the office of the BIR commissioner on the same day.

Ramel said it was imperative that the BIR exercise its mandate to enforce collection of taxes for the benefit of its citizens.

The unpaid estate taxes were originally pegged at P23 billion but ballooned to over P203 billion with interest, penalties and fees.

If elected president, Domagoso had vowed to collect the unpaid estate taxes and use the money for financial assistance to 3.5 million Filipinos who lost their jobs at the height of the pandemic.
