Jose Cardinal Sanchez dies at 91

MANILA, Philippines—Jose Cardinal Sanchez, Archbishop Emeritus of Nueva Segovia passed away Friday, 4:30am. He was to turn 92 on March 17.

Sanchez, a native of Pandan, Catanduanes was born on March 17, 1920. He was ordained in Naga City on May 12, 1946.

In 1991, he was named prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy up to June 1996. Also, from 1991 to 1993, he became President of the Commission for Preservation of Artistic and Historic Patrimony of the Church.

He was created and proclaimed cardinal by Pope John Paul II in the consistory of June 28, 1991.
