‘Agaton’ death toll rises to 178 with 3 more reported deaths

MANILA, Philippines — The total number of deaths in the wake of  Tropical Depression Agaton’s onslaught rose to 178 after three more fatalities were reported, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said that of the 178 reported deaths, 156 are from the Eastern Visayas, 17 from Western Visayas, three from the Davao Region and two from Central Visayas.

Many of the deaths in Eastern Visayas are from Baybay City, Leyte, which reported 101 deaths; and Abuyog town, which tallied 52 fatalities, following the landslides that struck the area.

A total of 111 people are also still reported as missing, the NDRRMC said.

Many of the missing people are from Baybay City at 103, and one resident from Abuyog. Six other persons in Capiz and one from Davao de Oro are also reported as missing.

There are also eight people reported to be injured, the agency added.

Damage to agriculture is pegged at P257,025,441, while damage to infrastructure is now at P6,950,000.

“Agaton” weakened into a low-pressure area last Tuesday. It completely dissipated a day after.
