Talisay women to combat violence

Two thousand women here commemorated the International Women’s Day yesterday by renewing vigilance against domestic violence.

Marissa Bering, president of the Talisay Federation of Barangay Women’s Association (FBWA), said that this year, they will focus on increasing the capability of the women to fight domestic violence.

She said that based on their investigation, some 30 percent of women in the city are not aware of their rights against domestic violence. Many women just keep their silence despite experiencing violence and other forms of abuse from their husbands or live-in partners.

“This year, we are intensifying our campaign against domestic violence by increasing awareness on women’s rights and to provide knowledge on how to fight this,” Bering said.

She said they will be enlisting the assistance of the local government unit (LGU), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Philippine National Police in their campaign against domestic violence.

The event International Women’s Day event yesterday also served as the commencement of the Women’s Month activities in the city. This week, the FBWA will highlight promotion and showcasing of livelihood activities. Next week, they have sports activities and will cap the month with medical mission.
