Women to P-Noy: pay ‘social debt’

/ 07:33 AM March 09, 2012

WOMEN members of the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) also urged President Benigno S. Aquino III to honor the government’s “social debt,” especially to Filipino women who now “carry heavier burden due to the deficiencies of past and present administrations.”

In a statement, FDC emphasized that the government has a ”social debt” especially for the women’s sector since they were not ensured the delivery of essential needs like food, education for their children and health care services.

“The government has failed to provide for its citizens, as its programs fall short in providing these needs and services for all. Social programs are sacrificed time and again, every time government’s fiscal standing falters,” FDC Cebu Women’s Committee President Corazon Lim said.

“Women need not die from giving birth especially since key international and national policies, such as CEDAW and the Magna Carta of Women that assure women’s health from birth until death, have been passed over the last decades,” said Haide Amigable, National vice president of Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralita ng Lungsod (KPML).

The group celebrated the 102th International Women’s day yesterday with a candle light rally from Sto. Rosario Church to Cebu City’s downtown area in Colon.
