ZAMBOANGA CITY––Nine persons, mostly minors, were rescued Sunday after the boat they boarded capsized in Barangay Tandu Bato, Luuk town, Sulu.

Major General Ignatius Patrimonio, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, assured the public that all the passengers of the motorized banca were well and safe after almost an hour of ordeal at sea.

Colonel Vincent Mark Anthony Blanco, commander of the 4th Marine Brigade, said the boat was overloaded as it headed towards Sitio Taindi of Barangay Kan Mindus of Luuk when it chanced upon a strong wave and current causing it to capsize.

“We received calls from concerned citizens in the community, who reported that a vessel capsized and passengers, mostly minors, were floating for almost an hour,” Blanco said, referring to the two rescued adults and seven minors belonging to the Badjao tribe.

He identified the rescued passengers as Katrina Columbos, 21; Sindah Mundo, 13; Analiza Lunga, 14; Sarimah Marsining, 17; Junaipa Ebual, 15; Malia Alpa, 14; Karina Tarpoh, 18; Monisa Kimar, 12; and Alpi Bual, 28.

“Our marines brought the rescued individuals for first aid treatment and medical management at the Luuk District Hospital. As of this reporting, the rescued passengers are in good condition, and we
turned them over to the Municipal Disaster Rescue Management Office
of Luuk, Sulu,” Blanco added.
